Bourdon Street

Bourdon Street

Bourdon Street - where Alice and Ernest's first child, George, was born in 1900 .
The Boer War had been raging since 1896 when the Boers rose against the British oppressors - as they saw them. Gradually soldiers from other commonwealth countries were dragged into the grim and bloody fighting. George's birth coincided with relief of the town of Mafeking in Cape Province, South Africa, which had been besieged by the Boers and was relieved by the British Army on May 17th 1900. There was great rejoicing in England and Alice and Ernest gave their son, born on May 16tth , 'Mafeking' as a middle name.
